Psychosocial support for adults with severe mental illness

What is available?

Primary Health Tasmania has commissioned a service to support people living with severe mental illness who need targeted help getting back on their feet, as part of the National Psychosocial Support (NPS) Measure.

This specialised, less intensive psychosocial support service is linked to the person’s goals and is delivered for the short time that they need it (for up to six months).

The non-clinical psychosocial support service available under this program works alongside other clinical mental health and physical health services.

The NPS Measure service includes:

  • guided activities to help bring back the person’s ability to function in everyday life and make their life more stable. Activities could focus on social skills and friendships, family connections, study, work and more
  • support for setting goals
  • both individual outreach and group activities.

Who is eligible?

The service is available to people who:

  • have a diagnosed mental illness that is severe and episodic
  • are 18 years and over
  • would benefit from time-limited non-clinical psychosocial support
  • do not receive services funded through the NDIS
  • do not receive psychosocial services funded through the Tasmanian Department of Health.

Where is it available?

This service is available statewide.

Not all of Primary Health Tasmania's commissioned services are physically delivered in every local community, but eligible people in the areas indicated have access to some level of service. This could be face to face or through other means such as phone support. Speak to the service provider for more information.

Who can make a referral?

People can refer themselves to this service. Referrals can also be made by primary care providers including GPs, mental health nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health counsellors, and community service organisations.

What is the IAR level of care? (information for health professionals)

This is an Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) Level of Care 3 (moderate intensity) and 4 (high intensity) service. More information about IAR is available here.

How much does it cost?

This service is funded by the Australian Government. There is no cost to eligible people.
